A word with… Ron Coppin

 In Stonemason, The Stone Family

Since inheriting the business from his father, Ron has been leading the way for RC Coppin as Director. In our latest blog, he talks about the craft of stonemasonry in deeper detail, exploring the history of the business and reflecting on some of the biggest projects he’s been involved with over the years.

How long have you been a stonemason?

Almost fifty years!

I first discovered stonemasonry at the age of 12, when my Dad offered me a position at the business working as a Saturday boy.

For a long time, I focused mainly on hand inscriptions, but I ended up moving into the more demanding side of stonemasonry when I was 18 years old.

What area do you specialise in?

My speciality is working with marble. I like focusing on the fabrication of this natural stone and turning it into all manner of different things.

Tell us about the most impressive project you’ve done.

Several years ago, the National Coal Board in Westminster requested a solid marble conference table for their meeting room with enough space for 30 people to sit around it.

The project took three months of extremely hard and intricate work, paying close attention to detail from start to finish.

It was a proud moment when it was completed.

How about the most challenging?

Back in the 1980s, a damaged antique marble fireplace in the style of Louis XIV was sent to us for restoration.

The hand-carved bust at one end needed to match the opposite side – and, because this was over 35 years ago, the whole thing had to be done by hand.

To give an indication of just how valuable this fireplace was, it was insured for £80,000 – back then that was a staggering amount of money.

What do you enjoy most about stonemasonry?

The most enjoyable aspect is definitely seeing the finished product.

There’s nothing more satisfying than watching the final piece being taken out the door after weeks of organisation and work.

What’s your favourite stone and why?

For working, travertine is a great stone – flexible and dependable.

Overall though, my favourite stone is Azul Macaubas – a stunning blue marble that can’t be beaten for appearance.

When you’re not at work, how do you unwind?

Sitting back with a real ale, served at room temperature.

What’s your top tip for working with natural stone?

Patience – it’s absolutely essential to take your time for the best results to emerge.
