Beginners guide to designing a kitchen – part 2
You have decided on the layout of the kitchen and you know where all the large appliances need to be. You have chosen your palette and the style of the design. It’s time to take a closer look at finishes and textures.
See, feel
You have an idea of what type of stone you are after and finish you want to go for and it looks great – on paper. The next step is to visit a supplier to see how your dream stone looks like in real life. After all, this is a decision about the look of your kitchen that is going to last for quite a while!
It’s important to see the stone in natural light as well as in the showroom. Whenever possible, ask to see a bigger slab of the stone. What looks lovely on a smaller sample, may be overwhelming – or boring – on a larger surface. Touch it, feel the texture. If you are still happy with it, go for it.
4. Start with a purpose
Ask yourself what it is that you want to do in your kitchen? Think about your and your family’s lifestyle. Is it important for you to have breakfast together? Perhaps everyone runs around in the morning, just grabbing a quick coffee and a bagel? Are you looking to create a space to discover your inner MasterChef or a corner to fix Jamie’s 15-Minute Meals
Then think about how much storage space you need, what about maintenance – do you want it as easy to clean as possible?
It’s a lot to consider, but answering these questions will make it easier for your designer and supplier to give you the solutions you’ll be happy with. It’s all about making it as YOU like it and achieving YOUR goal.
5. When in doubt, ask for advice
Great concepts often require unusual solutions. Good stonemasons welcome a challenge – after all, coming up with ideas that are both beautiful and functional is what it’s all about. Discussion is an extremely important part of a project.
If you cannot decide, an experienced supplier will be able to explain pros and cons of the options you are considering. In the end, the decision is yours; however, it is always good to get some useful information.
